But First, What is Hatha Yoga?
The human body is a maze of more than 72,000 nadis. While scientists found neurons, nerves and blood vessels quite later, traditional Indian medicine and spiritual theory defined the nadis as tubes/pipes that act as channels for carrying prana, the life force energy, as we know it now. According to the Shiva Samhita, there are around 350,000 nadis. Among them, 14 are particularly crucial, and according to Kundalini Yoga, out of these 14, three nadis are most vital- Ida, Pingala and Sushumna.
Hatha Yoga revolves around balancing the energies of the Ida and Pingala nadi that epitomize the duality of existence. While the Ida spirals up the left side of the spine and ends at the left nostril, Pingala is the mirror image of Ida, ending up at the right nostril. Pingala is the solar energy with its warm, challenging, feminine aura, whereas Ida is the lunar energy aligned with cool, comforting, and feminine energy. Hatha Yoga is made from two words “Ha” meaning sun and “Tha” meaning moon. The principle in Hatha Yoga is harmonizing the lunar and solar energies within our chakras to prod our higher consciousness to life.

Before you start doing Hatha Yoga, check which nostril is more active. If it is the right nostril, Pingala is more energized, and you need to do asanas involving seated postures and forward bends to cool you down. On the other hand, if the left nostril is more active, you must do asanas like back bends, standing poses, inversions and twists.
